Cedar Lake Restoration Project Year 1 Observations

2 major milestones of note on Cedar Lake this summer:
1. FILAMENTOUS ALGAE
Those stringy unrooted blobs that float around the lake and end up on the shorelines around the lake and islands. The short life cycle of this algae creates a musty odor while it's dying and regrowing all summer long.
This makes parking your pontoon on an island to play not a good option.
THE STABILIZING EFFECT OF THE WQ3D TECHNOLOGY ON WATER CHEMISTRY HAS ONCE AGAIN SHOWN TO MITIGATE, MANAGE AND CONTROL THIS ALGAE.
It's been nice to see all of the activities around the islands this summer.

2. BACTERIA
There are 2 strains of toxic bacteria that we monitor for:
E COLI
We monitor this by sending in lab samples. The safety threshold of this bacteria is 120 CFU/ML
The lake this summer has not exceeded 60 CFU/ML the lowest sample was 22 CFU/ML.
Stabilizing water chemistry works.
CYANOBACTERIA OR BLUE GREEN ALGAE
Cyanobacteria is claimed by scientists to be one of the oldest half plant half animal entities on the planet and is responsible for creating the atmosphere that we breathe. (75% nitrogen 18% oxygen).
We have found that when lake water chemistry gets destabilized by chemical pollution after heavy rains , these strains of toxic bacteria have little standing in their way to overwhelm a lake.
Cyanobacteria can be monitored on site using a reliable PH and DO meter.
We used an Aqua troll 500 by IN-SITU
If a spike in D.O. is observed of over 15 to 16 PPM of DO it indicates that cyanobacteria is increasing (cyanobacteria produces DO). If this spike persists for more than a couple days, we would request a specific lab to perform a toxin screen.
Fortunately we have not been in that situation this summer on Cedar, it's been doing very well for the 1st year. Next year should be better.
