Muck‑Digesting Pucks + Oxygen Strategies for a Clay‑Bottom Lake
Cedar Lake’s muck bottom naturally stores phosphorus. When oxygen levels near the lake bottom drop, that phosphorus can be released back into the water, fueling algae blooms. This program pairs muck‑digesting pucks with oxygen‑support strategies to improve lake bottom conditions and oxygen levels while suppressing internal phosphorus release that affects the entire lake.

When applied in oxygen‑rich water, they accelerate organic matter breakdown, reduce odor, and improve near‑shore access.

Maintaining dissolved oxygen near the lake bottom keeps phosphorus bound within clay sediments, reducing late‑summer algae risks.
3. Monitoring & Accountability
• Regular water clarity measurements (Secchi disk)

Targeted Muck‑Digesting Pucks Help:
When applied in oxygen‑rich water, they accelerate organic matter breakdown, reduce odor, and improve near‑shore access.
Each spring, we have Muck Pucks available. What is a Muck Puck? Muck pucks are used to add necessary nutrients and ingredients to eat the sediment on the bottom of the lake and restore it back to its natural bottom.
With a Muck Puck, we are digesting the muck into nutrients in the water column feeding plankton, which form the base of the marine food web.

Separated phosphorus drops to lake floor into the sand in an inert form, removing it from the ecosystem of the lake.
