Bylaws:
All vessels operating on the great pond
known as Cedar Lake shall comply with
the following Cedar Lake Rules and
regulations, Massachusetts General Laws
C.90B, and The Division of Law
Enforcement Regulations 323 cmr
1.00-5.00. Officers of the Sturbridge
Police Dept. and the Massachusetts
Environmental Police shall enforce all
general laws and regulations as those
laws apply to M.G.L. 90B.
1. Operation:
-
No person shall operate a boat or
craft within 150 ft. of a public
swimming area.
-
No person shall operate a craft
faster than headway speed between
150 and 300 feet of public swim
area.
-
No person shall operate any
watercraft in the town beach cove in
speeds in excess of five (5) miles
per hour or headway speed.
-
No craft may operate faster than 10
miles per hour between the hours of
sunset and sunrise.
-
No craft may operate within 150 ft.
from end of other coves i.e.:
Turnpike cove and Rt. 20 cove,
unless at headway speed.
-
No person shall operate any craft in
excess of 45 miles per hour.
-
Power watercraft must be equipped
with sufficient muffler or under
water exhaust and such muffler or
underwater exhaust must be in use at
all times.
-
No person shall operate any
watercraft while under the influence
of alcohol or narcotics.
-
Non-motorized craft have right of
way at all times on Cedar Lake.
-
All motorized craft shall keep a
distance of 150 feet from shore and
other craft unless at headway speed.
-
All craft, motorized and
non-motorized must display running
lights, red and green fore, white
aft, visible 360 degrees on the
horizon, from sunset to sunrise.
-
Head on approach, each boat must
bear right. When approaching
at right angle, the craft on the
right has the right of way.
-
The flow of traffic is counter
clockwise on Cedar Lake.
-
The slalom ski course is the
property of the Ski Club and
permission must be obtained to use
or travel through course.
II. Water-skiing and recreational
towing:
-
Recreational towing is pulling
anything such as a tube, kneeboard,
wake board, inflatable toy,
parasail, etc.
-
No boat shall pull a water skier or
recreational tow unless accompanied
by a person no younger than twelve
in a position to observe the person
being towed.
-
There shall be no water-skiing or
recreational towing between the
hours of sunset and sunrise or when
visibility is too poor to be deemed
safe.
-
All persons water-skiing or on a
recreational tow item must wear a
U.S. Coast Guard approved personal
flotation device (PFD) type I, II or
III or wetsuit with approved
floatation.
III. Swimming:
-
No person shall swim or float more
than 50 ft. from shore unless in
marked swim area or accompanied by
boat.
IV. Jet Skis - Who May Operate a
Personal Watercraft (PWC) and
Regulations
-
No person under the age of sixteen
(16) may operate a personal
watercraft. Sixteen or
seventeen years of age must obtain
safety certificate given by U.S.C.G.
or Division of Law Enforcement.
Persons 18 years of age or older may
operate a PWC on Massachusetts'
waters without restrictions.

No person shall operate in a
negligent manner. The following are
examples of negligent operations:
Unreasonably jumping or attempting
to jump the wake of another vessel;
Following within 150 feet of a water
skiier; Weaving through congested
vessel traffic; Speeding in
restricted areas; Crossing
unreasonable close to another
vessel; Operating a PWC in such a
manner as to endanger life or limb
or property of another person;
Towing a water skier or any person
in any manner from a PWC; Operating
a PWC between the house of sunset
and sunrise.

Proximity - No person shall operate
a PWC: Within 150 ft. of shore of
moored vessel except at headway
speed; Within 150 ft. of a public
bathing area; Between 150 and 300
ft. of public bathing area except at
headway speed; Within 150 ft.
of a swimmer in the water.

Any person aboard a PWC must wear a
U.S.C.G. approved PFD type I, II,
III.
V. Who May Operate a Motorboat:
The restrictions below apply to boats
propelled by any type of motor, whether
or not the motor is the principal source
of propulsion.
-
Persons under 12 years of age may
operate a motorboat of
Massachusetts' water only if
accompanied on board and directly
supervised by a competent person 18
years of age or older.
-
Person 12-15 years of age may
operate a motorboat on Massachusetts
waters only if they
have passed an approved boating
safety course or are accompanied on
board and directly supervised by a
competent person 18 years of age or
older.
-
Persons 16 years of age or older may
operate a motorboat on
Massachusetts's waters without
restrictions.

Disposal of Hazardous Materials:
When accidents happen, hopefully we are
prepared. Gas and oil are not good in
our lake, and we have a plan in effect
to assist you and others using the lake
should an accidental spill occur.

Don’t panic
-
Do not stir-up the water where the
spill has occurred.
-
If you feel you can’t handle it
yourself, or its spreading quickly,
call 911 for the Fire Dept.

We have a complete spill kit geared
for our lake at the Host Hotel Boat
House next to their dock. It
contains 10 bags of Speedi-Dry for
land based spills, pads and
containment booms for the lake to
absorb and pick up the oil in the
water. These belong to the Cedar
Lake Association and are free to
those using our lake.

If the need should arise to use any
of these materials, please contact
The Cedar Lake Association, so we
can replace them in our stock.

If the spill occurs after hours, the
Host Security has the key for the
boat house.
